ARIPO, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization, is an intergovernmental union of some English-speaking countries in Africa. It was established on February 15, 1978. It was formerly known as the African Regional Industrial Property Organization (ARIPO) and was renamed the current ARIPO in 2005. ARIPO aims to cooperate in patents, copyrights, designs, utility models, traditional knowledge and trademarks. ARIPO currently has 22 member states, and 20 countries have joined the Harare Protocol on Patents and Industrial Designs, namely Botswana, Cape Verde, Swaziland, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Kingdom of Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Seychelles, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
