Recently, the American company MAXVAL released the 2023 Patent Disclosure Data Annual Report based on the 2023 patent application disclosure data, and conducted an in-depth analysis of the global innovation trajectory, technological progress and intellectual property dynamic landscape in 2023 that the public wants to know.
In 2023, a total of 3,308,240 patent applications were published worldwide, with China, the United States, Japan, South Korea and the European Patent Office ranking among the top in the world in terms of patent disclosure data. Compared with 2022, the total number of patent applications published increased by 1%.
In 2023, the number of patent disclosures in China will increase by about 3% compared with 2022, while the number of patent disclosures in the United States will decrease slightly by 0.9% compared with 2022. The number of patent applications from large companies has increased significantly, among which Tencent (36%), Samsung (15%), Apple (15%), Qualcomm (8%) and Canon (6%) have the largest increases.
It is worth noting that four of the top five applicants in 2023 are from Asia, with Samsung publishing the most applications. Chinese companies, especially those in electronics and telecommunications, dominate the list. American companies such as Qualcomm, IBM and Apple also perform well. Hospitals, universities and research institutions account for 31.14% of all applications. The United States and China remain the main markets for top patent owners. 85% of patent applications from these major players come from IP5 countries, followed by India, Germany, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Brazil and Vietnam.
Among foreign patent applications filed in the United States, Japan and China still dominate, followed by Europe. Patent applications from South Korea have continued to grow over the past five years, and the growth was particularly significant in 2022. South Korea has applied for a large number of PCT and EP applications, demonstrating its strong focus on protecting the global market.
Among all technology fields, the number of Internet, computer software and IT services has increased by 21.11% in the past five years, and more technological innovations are concentrated in the fields of: digitization and management of documents and services, computer software with machine learning technology, data processing, image processing, blockchain and computer vision, but in 2023, the number of patents in this field has dropped by 4.08%. The number of patent disclosures in biotechnology has increased by 13.81% in the past five years, and continued to grow by 0.56% in 2023. Technological innovations are more concentrated in the fields of antibodies, peptides, immune serum, cell surface antigens, binding proteins, gene regulation and cancer treatment.
In 2023, other technology fields with the largest declines in the number of patent application disclosures include: medical devices, personal care/cosmetics, aerospace, semiconductors, etc.
The five jurisdictions with the largest number of published patent applications are China, the United States, Japan, South Korea and the European EPO, while the applicant with the largest number of published patents is Samsung Electronics, while Huawei, LG, Qualcomm and Haier rank 2-5.
