Denmark, together with the two constituent countries of the Kingdom of Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, is the northernmost country in the world. Because Denmark, Norway and Sweden have similar languages, cultures and histories, they are collectively called Scandinavian countries. Denmark is a member state of the European Union with a highly developed economy and a typical welfare state with a very small gap between the rich and the poor, making it a highly developed country in the world. Denmark is also one of the founding members of NATO.
