EUIPO conducts only formality examination for design applications. The applicant can file the application in any official language of the European Union. In addition to the language used to file the application, the second language must also be indicated, i.e. English/French/German/Italian/Spanish. Once the language selection is submitted then cannot be modified. If the requirements are met, the design applicatio will be granted in about 10 days. If the design meets the following conditions, the design application will be granted within 2 days at the earliest.

  • Use fixed-format electronic forms;
  • Indicate the design classification;
  • DAS;
  • No related to novelty grace period;
  • Indicate ID number of the applicant and client;
  • Payment via EUIPO account debit or credit card.

EUIPO may offer a 12-month notice grace period to allow designers to verify the likelihood of commercial success before proceeding with registration.

  • Grant Fee: The applicant shall pay the granted fee when paying the filing fee.
  • Annuity: The 1st renewal must be paid within the validity period of 5 years, and the annual fee can be paid within a grace period of 6 months after expiration. A 25% penalty will be paid at the same time.
