INPI only conducts formality examination of utility model patent applications. Substantive examination may only be requested if the applicant deems it necessary. An invention protected by a patent can be protected simultaneously or successively with a utility model. To this end, applicants have a maximum of 1 year to make changes.

If the British patent application is disclosed in an officially recognized international exhibition 6 months before the application, or is disclosed maliciously by a third party, the novelty grace period will be enjoyed. Evidence of exhibits at the exhibition must be submitted with the application.
For the design of partial substantive examination, multiple designs can be included in one design application, but the designs must belong to the same class in the international design classification.
