The types of trademarks that can be applied for in Brazil include word trademarks, graphic trademarks, symbol trademarks, collective trademarks, certification marks, and three-dimensional trademarks. Smell, sound, taste, and touch are currently not the objects of trademark protection in Brazil. Brazil has not established a one-standard, multiple-class system. One trademark application shall not contain multiple product or service categories. Renewal applications must be submitted within 6 months before the deadline, or within the 6-month grace period after the deadline.
  • If the renewal fee is paid by the lawyer who filed the previous application, no power of attorney is required. Otherwise, a scanned copy of the authorization letter signed by the new lawyer must be submitted. If a power of attorney is submitted, it should have the signatures of the registrant and two witnesses. No verification or certification is required.
