In CIPO's view, the increase in official trademark registration fees is necessary to take into account labour costs, application volume, and inflation since 2004, when CIPO conducted a comprehensive review and substantial adjustments to official fees. It is important to note that CIPO relies entirely on revenue generated from official fees to fund its operations. The Government of Canada does not provide any funding to CIPO.
CIPO previously stated that it would add more than 100 new examiners in 2023 to reduce delays and backlogs in Canadian trademark examinations.
