In September 2021, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) published the report "Analysis of Green EU Trademarks, Goods and Services Specifications 1996-2020". The report defines green EU Trademarks (EUTMs) as those applications that contain at least one "green" term in the description of their goods and services. Green terms refer to terms related to environmental protection and sustainable development in the description of goods and services.
In February 2023, EUIPO published an update on EUTMs trends up to December 2021, which included data up to December 2022.
The number of EUTMs reached its maximum in 2021, with 21,281 EUTMs filed, an increase of 13.3% to 14.5% in 2021, before decreasing to 19,659 EUTMs in 2022. EUTM applications from EU companies performed better than green EUTM applications from non-EU applicants, increasing in both absolute and relative terms.
In 12 member states, the proportion of EUTMs increased more than the average for EU trademarks, with Slovenia showing the largest increase, from 12% to nearly 20%, ranking first among EU member states. A quarter of green terms belong to the energy saving category; 18% of green terms belong to the energy production category; 15% to the transport category; and 14% to the pollution control category.
