WIPO released the "2023 PCT International Application Statistics" on March 7, 2024. Huawei, Samsung and Qualcomm are still in the leading position as in previous years. The PCT international application volume decreased slightly by 1.8% in 2023, the first decline in 14 years, but India stood out with an increase of nearly 50%, while China and the United States saw a decline in volume. In the international trademark system, the number of international registered trademark applications decreased by 7%.

In 2023, there were a total of 272,600 PCT international applications, with China filing 69,610 PCT applications, still ranking first in the world, but down 0.6% from 2022. The United States ranked second with 55,678 applications, down 5.3%, Japan ranked third with 48,879 applications (-2.9%), South Korea ranked fourth with 22,288 applications, up 1.2%, and Germany ranked fifth with 16,916 applications, down 3.2%.
Among the top 15 countries, India grew by 44.6% and Turkey grew by 8.5%, making them the two countries with the fastest growth in PCT applications in the world, while the Netherlands grew by 5.8%, France grew by 2% and South Korea grew by 1.2%.
In 2023, Huawei ranked first in the world with 6,494 PCT applications, but the number of applications decreased by 1,195 compared with 2022. Samsung Electronics ranked second with 3,924 applications, Qualcomm ranked third with 3,410 applications, Japan's Mitsubishi Electric ranked fourth with 2,152 applications, and BOE ranked fifth with 1,988 applications. Among the top 10 applicants, China's CATL grew the fastest, with a surge of 1,533 applications, and rose 84 places to rank eighth.
In terms of educational institutions, the University of California, USA ranked first with 531 PCT applications, Soochow University in China ranked second with 332 applications, the University of Texas, USA with 217 applications, Tsinghua University in China with 209 applications, and the University of Denver, USA with 180 applications, ranking the top five respectively. Among them, Tsinghua University had the largest increase, with 35 applications more than in 2022.
Among the PCT international applications published in 2023, applications related to algorithms accounted for 10.2%, followed by digital communications at 9.4%, electronic machinery and energy at 7.9%, medical technology at 6.7%, and pharmaceuticals at 4.7%. Among the 10 major technology fields, electronic machinery and energy increased by 8.8%, transportation increased by 7.7%, semiconductors increased by 5.6%, and biotechnology increased by 3.8%. However, the number of applications in the algorithm field also ended its 7-year upward trend in 2023.

In 2023, 64,200 international trademark applications were filed under WIPO's Madrid System, a 7% decrease from 2022. Among them, US applicants filed the largest number of international trademark applications, which was 10,987, followed by Germany with 6,613, China with 5,473, France with 4,267, and the United Kingdom with 3,817.
Among the top 10 origin countries, China's trademark applications rose by 7.7% against the trend, and South Korea rose by 2.9%, making them the only two countries that maintained an upward trend in number. Germany's Madrid applications fell by 14%, Australia by 13.9%, Switzerland by 12.4%, and the United States by 11.8%, which is the second consecutive year of decline.
In 2023, the French company L'Oréal Paris filed 199 international trademark applications, ranking first for the third consecutive year; Germany's BMW Group ranked second with 124 applications, rising 33 places; Bulgaria's Euro Games Technology filed 118 applications, Germany's Boehringer Ingelheim International GMBH filed 110 applications, and Switzerland's Novartis AG filed 110 applications, ranking in the top five.

In 2023, the number of industrial design applications under the Hague system hit a new high of 25,343, up 1% from the previous year, showing an upward trend for three consecutive years. Germany ranked first with 4,517 design applications, followed by China with 3,758, the United States with 2,668, Switzerland with 2,196, and Italy with 1,817. Among the top 10 source countries, China increased by 46.9%, Turkey increased by 45.7%, the United States increased by 9.2%, Japan increased by 6.9%, and France increased by 4.7%.
Among the public international industrial design applications, Samsung Electronics ranked first with 544 design patent applications, surpassing Procter & Gamble (525), which ranked first in 2022. LG Electronics and Germany's Porsche both had 352, ranking third, followed by China's Xiaomi, with a total of 315 designs.
Compared with 2022, Germany's Porsche, France's Hermes Sellier, Germany's Triple A Finance and Alfred Karcher all saw significant increases, with increases of 235, 179, 175 and 142 respectively.
Among the industrial design patent applications under the Hague system, transport accounts for the largest proportion of all technological fields, at 11.2%, of which recording and communication equipment accounts for 8.6% of all applications, furniture accounts for 7.6%, packaging and containers accounts for 6.9%, and household items accounts for 5.6%.
