In the 2024 Global Innovation Index (GII) released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, entered the top 100 for the first time, ranking 93rd in the science and technology cluster, making history. This is a major achievement for Malaysia on the global innovation stage and demonstrates Malaysia's ability to compete internationally in scientific and technological research and technological advancement.

The Malaysian National Applied Research and Development Centre (MIMOS)’s contribution to semiconductor research has seen it identified as the world’s top patent applicant in this technology field, cementing Kuala Lumpur’s position as a hub for technological innovation.

The GII index is a benchmark that ranks economic clusters according to their innovation capacity, with a focus on science and technology clusters. The Global Innovation Index's assessment methodology does not take into account administrative or political boundaries, but focuses on geographical areas with a high density of inventors and scientific research.
