South Korea surpasses China and Japan in patent applications for battery management systems

The Battery Management System (BMS) acts like the brain of an electric vehicle’s battery, monitoring the battery pack for any abnormalities while the electric vehicle is driving, charging or docked to ensure that the battery is in optimal condition.

South Korean battery company LG Energy Solution has a significantly higher number of patent applications in the BMS field than its Chinese and Japanese competitors. According to its latest report, from 2018 to 2022, the world's top 10 battery companies filed a total of 13,500 patent applications in the battery field, of which 7,400 were from South Korea's LG Energy Solution, Samsung SD and SK On, accounting for 55% of patent applications in this field, while LG Energy Solution had 5,475 applications, accounting for 40.6% of the applications of the top 10 battery companies.
