South Sudan

South Sudan's Ministry of Justice accepted trademark applications under Sudan's 1969 Trademark Law in 2014, but stopped working soon thereafter until 2023, when the ministry allowed MTN Group (mobile telecommunications company) to "retain" its trademark.

Trademark applicants can now file a "reserve" trademark application with South Sudan's Ministry of Justice in order to retain their plaintiff's trademark pending the passage of the Trademarks Bill, which is currently pending parliamentary approval, into law. The trademark applicant/right holder will have priority rights and will prohibit third parties from submitting and registering similar or identical trademarks when trademark applications are opened again in South Sudan.

Qatar

The Gulf Cooperation Council Patent Office (GCCPO) recently announced that it will begin accepting new patent applications on behalf of Qatar and conduct formal and substantive examinations of patents in accordance with the GCC Patent Law and its regulations as revised in April 2021. At the same time, once a patent application is accepted, it will be announced and authorized by the respective patent office.

Currently, there are three countries that GCCPO can cover, namely Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar.

Kuwait

Starting from January 2023, trademark applicants can submit a formal trademark search request to the Kuwait Trademark Office and, upon payment of official fees, obtain an official search report on whether the trademark is available, as well as complete details of similar or identical trademarks.
