Taiwan, China releases analysis of trademark registration trends over the past five years

On November 6, 2023, WIPO released the 2023 World Intellectual Property Indicators Report, which announced the total number of trademark registrations worldwide from 2022 to 2023, the average issuance time of the first examination opinion, the average review time, the examination result statistics, the average number of categories of GDP in various countries, and the number of categories per capita. Based on this, TIPO released the Taiwan region's industry application trademark trend analysis report from 2018 to 2022. The main contents are as follows:

1. The number of global trademark registration applications in 2022-2023 increased significantly by 15.7%, and the number of trademark registration categories increased significantly by 14.5%, ending the downward trend in the number of trademark registrations caused by the epidemic. Trademark registration applications have returned to the level before the epidemic, and the number of trademark registrations has increased to three and a half times that of 2008. The number of trademark registration categories in mainland China reached 7.513 million, ranking first in the world, nearly 10 times more than the second-ranked United States with 766,000 categories; while the number of trademark registrations in Taiwan, China was 122,000 categories, and the number of trademark registration categories was 102,000, both ranking 18th in the world.

Second, the trademark registration categories in Taiwan, China are the same as the four-day trademark registration categories announced by WIPO, namely: technology research, health care, clothing accessories, and leisure education. However, in the health care category, the number of foreign trademark registrations in Taiwan is significantly higher than the WIPO data, indicating that foreign trademark applicants attach great importance to brands in this business field in Taiwan.
