WIPO publishes 2023 Hague Design Annual Report

Recently, WIPO released the 2023 Hague Design Annual Report. In 2023, WIPO received a total of 8,566 Hague design patent applications, an increase of 7.4% over 2022. The top five applicant countries were China with 1,813 applications, an increase of 40.9%; Germany with 904 applications, an increase of 4%; South Korea with 825 applications, an increase of 1%; the United States with 746 applications, a decrease of 1.3% compared with the same period last year; and Switzerland with 712 applications, an increase of 9.2%.

In addition, the total number of designs included in overseas design patent applications reached 25,414, an increase of 1.3% over the same period in 2022. Among them, Germany submitted 4,518 items, making it the world's largest source of overseas designs; China submitted 3,758 items, ranking second, and the United States ranked third with 2,674 items; Switzerland submitted 2,196 items and Italy submitted 1,817 items.

Among the top ten applicants, South Korea's Samsung Electronics ranked first with 544 designs, surpassing Procter & Gamble's 525 designs, followed by Germany's Porsche AG, South Korea's LG Corp., and Xiaomi.

In 2023, the EU remained the Hague Member State with the largest number of designations in Hague design patent applications, with 5,843 designations, including 18,575 designs. In addition, the fastest growing designated country was China, with an increase of 68.4%.
