New Developments in Trademarks in Yemen

The Yemeni Trademark Office will officially adopt the 12th edition of the Nice Classification from October 11, 2024. This update brings Yemen's classification of goods and services in line with international standards.

To register a Yemeni trademark, you need to consider the following points:

• Only one mark per category is allowed, and each trademark registration application can only include 4 goods or services.
• Under the newly adopted classification, registration of trademarks for alcoholic beverages (Class 33), certain alcoholic goods (Class 32) and pork (Class 29) is not permitted.
• All received documents can be published electronically through the Yemeni Intellectual Property Electronic Management System, instead of through the previous official gazette "Al-Tijarah", which is currently only accessible to qualified agents in Yemen. The electronic method has also been extended to other related services such as filing, opposition requests and opposition replies, which can no longer be submitted in paper form.
