Recently, IP5 released the latest "IP5 Statistical Report" this week. As of the end of 2022, 91% of the 17.2 million valid patents in the world are valid in the jurisdiction of one of the IP5.
Global patent application activity until 2022
- In 2022, there were 3.5 million patent applications worldwide, including direct national applications, direct regional applications, and PCT international applications, of which 93% came from the IP5 regions.
- In 2022, 77% of patent applications worldwide were filed directly by countries. The proportion of applications filed via the PCT route increases by one percentage point each year.
A total of 3 million patent applications were filed at the five major IP offices in 2023. The European Patent Office received some 199,275 European patent applications last year, 2.9% higher than the 2022 figure.
