Since January 19, 2025, Iraq has launched the latest trademark classification rules, abolishing the local subclassification of goods and services previously adopted in the country (i.e. the alphabetical classification method). This change is the result of Iraq's adoption of the 11th edition of the Nice Classification.
Applicants for trademark registration in Iraq must specify the basic (serial) number corresponding to the pre-approved goods or services according to the 11th edition of the Nice Classification. Existing class titles will no longer be accepted, and custom descriptions of goods or services are not allowed. For renewal and change applications, a reclassification request must be submitted to convert the previously used 7th edition of the Nice Classification to the 11th edition.
This change marks a major adjustment to Iraq’s trademark registration process, bringing it more in line with international classification standards, helping to simplify the process, improve efficiency, and promote integration with the international trademark system, as well as enhance transparency and consistency in Iraq’s trademark protection.
