Paris is about to usher in the 2024 Paris Olympics, and the use of some Olympic terms related to the Olympics is regulated by French law. Under French law, terms, colors, patterns (even fire emojis) related to the Olympics will be banned because they are reserved for sponsors.
1. The French National Olympic and Sports Committee owns the national Olympic emblem. It is also the guardian of:
1. Emblem, flag, motto and Olympic symbols;
2. Olympic anthem;
3. Olympic Games emblems, mascots, slogans and posters;
4. The "City + Year" Olympic Games jointly organized with the French Paralympic Committee and the French Sports Council;
5. The terms "Olympic Games", "Olympism" and "Olympia" and the abbreviation "JO";
6. Terms such as "Olympic", "Olympian" and "Olympian", unless used in normal usage in common language, may not use any of them for promotional or commercial purposes, nor may the public confuse it with the Olympic Movement.
2. Without authorization from the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, the elements and terms mentioned above are registered as trademarks. Copying, imitation, attachment, deletion or modification will be in accordance with Articles L. 716-9 of the Intellectual Property Code to Penalties shall be imposed in accordance with Article L. 716-13.
3. The following behaviors are prohibited: selling sporting goods using the flags of different countries on the website and using the word "Olympic".
