IP Australia will replace the current trademark goods and services list (AU picklist) with the Madrid list of goods and services (MGS) in 2024.
The MGS Directory is a terminology database used to classify goods and services subject to trademark applications in the Madrid System. It is used by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and many international trademark offices and has a wider range of terms than the AU picklist previously used by IP Australia.
Adoption of the MGS list will align Australia's classification standards with international rules. The change will make it easier for Australian exporters to protect their trademarks in other countries.
IP Austrialia will officially launch the MGS list in March 2024 and will introduce a semantic search function to help customers more easily find goods and service entries in the MGS list that have similar meanings to the terms they are looking for, and from previously used AU picklist seamlessly connects.
