Morocco has consolidated its leading position in the field of intellectual property in Africa and the Arab world, according to the latest International Intellectual Property Index 2024 released by Chambers.

According to a press release from Morocco World News, the Kingdom of Morocco ranked 22nd out of 55 countries assessed for innovation and creativity, obtaining a high score of 62.76 points, an achievement that highlights Morocco's commitment to strengthening its regulatory and legislative framework, following the ratification of important treaties such as the Singapore Treaty and the Geneva Act in 2022 to align itself with international standards.

Morocco’s efforts extend beyond legislation, with initiatives such as the creation of an Innovation Project Bank and an “IP Marketplace” designed to help businesses, start-ups, universities and research centers commercialize their inventions, as well as a program to speed up the processing of patent applications.

Despite these advances, the report highlights some challenges facing Morocco’s IP sector, particularly in areas such as enforcement, physical counterfeiting and online piracy rates. In addition, uncertainty remains regarding the patentability of creations involving intellectual activity.

Globally, countries with innovation and creativity scores above 90 include the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Sweden, which are benchmarks for IP standards and innovation ecosystems.

The International Intellectual Property Index, now in its 12th edition, assesses the intellectual property systems of economies around the world based on 50 different criteria.
