As an update to a previous article, the Entry into Force Agreement between the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos) will enter into force on 1 April 2025.
The effectiveness fee has been agreed by both parties at €180 and must be paid to the EPO within 6 months after the European search report is issued, or as part of the international PCT application entering the national phase. If the deadline is missed, it can be paid within a grace period of 2 months, but a 50% surcharge will be charged.
Currently, a single European patent grant provides protection in 39 Contracting States, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in six countries where protection has been granted, a number that will increase to seven once the Agreement with Costa Rica enters into force. The European patent system thus continues to develop into a centralized and cost-effective patent granting procedure, particularly in terms of the annual fee savings provided by the unit patent system.
