On the first anniversary of the establishment of the European Unified Patent System, Romania deposited the instrument of signature of the Agreement on a Unified Patent Court in Europe with the Council of the European Union in Brussels. According to the instrument of signature, Romania will join the Unified Patent System on September 1, 2024, which means that all European patents that take effect from September 1 will automatically cover Romania. So far, the number of EU member states participating in the Unified Patent System will increase to 18, covering a market of about 19 million people.

Since the European Unitary Patent came into force on June 1, 2023, the EPO has received 28,450 requests for a European Unitary Patent and registered nearly 27,700 European Unitary Patents. This means that one in four European patents has been converted into a European Unitary Patent.
