Indonesia’s Intellectual Property Office DGIP has declared 2024 the Year of Geographical Indications to raise awareness of how geographical indications themselves and products registered as such can improve the country’s economy.
In May 2024, the DGIP Geographical Indications Team conducted a three-day field trip in Sasirangan, South Kalimantan. Sasirangan fabrics are first soaked in oil and then dyed, but unlike the general jumputan tie-dyeing process, the production process of Sasirangan fabrics still uses natural dyes, such as mangosteen peel as purple dye, ironwood powder as red dye, and noni root as yellow dye.
