In 2024, Italy's innovation ecosystem demonstrated its resilience and vitality. Among the total 12,242 national patent applications in Italy in 2024, the number of invention patent applications totaled 10,148, an increase of 7.4% compared to 2023, while utility model applications decreased slightly, down 1.1%, totaling 1,830. The number of patent applications in force in Italy under European authorized patents decreased due to the influence of the European unified patent.
Among the regions of origin of Italian applicants, Lombardy ranks first. Other major applicant regions include Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Piedmont.
In 2024, PCT national phase entry requests in Italy totaled 251, an overall increase of 14% compared to 2023, with companies from China, Switzerland, Germany and the United States expressing more interest in the increasing internationalization of the Italian market.
Data from the Patent Report 2024 published by the Italian Patent and Trademark Office UIBM indicate a positive outlook for Italy’s innovation environment and reaffirm Italy’s role as a hub for technological innovation.
