  • IPOS adopted a new coding method after 2000. The previous 2-digit AD calendar was changed to a 4-digit AD calendar.   • via Paris Convention : 12 months from earliest priority date.
  • via Nationalization of PCT : 30 months from the earliest priority date.

Formality examination: IPOS will conduct formality examination first after receiving the patent application and the application fee of S$170 . The filing date will be determined by IPOS after the patent application passes through the formality examination. Those who do not meet the formality examination need to overcome the defects within 2 months after receiving the correction notice from IPOS. Formality examination includes examination of whether there is any missing information concerning priority, specification and drawings, etc.

Publication: A patent application is published 18 months from the filing date/priority date, and the applicant could file the request for early publication.

Search and substantive examination: The applicant can choose three ways to file a search request and substantive examination and such request should be filed within 36 months from the filing date at the latest, and pay the prescribed fees. IPOS will conduct examination for novelty, inventive step and industrial applicability. Applicant can take advantage of the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) and ASEAN Patent Examination Cooperation (ASPEC) procedures to obtain patent rights in Singapore more quickly and efficiently by using the examination result of other countries. If no deficiencies to overcome, the patent application will be granted. If the applicant cannot resolve the issue within 18 months from the date of the first OA, the patent application will be rejected.

A 12-month novelty grace period will be applicable if the disclosure results from a breach of confidentiality, or if the inventor exhibits at an international exhibition or society.

1-2 years

  • Grant fee: The applicant should file a request and pay the prescribed fee within 2 months after receipt of the notification of granted. 
  • The annuity shall be paid year by year starting from the 5th year from the filing date, and the grace period for late payment is 6 months.

Reinstatement of priority with "due care" and "unintentional/due care" is accepted and a priority restoration fee of SGD 290.00 is required.

IPOS only conducts formality examination for design applications, and the examination will be concerned: novelty statement, classification and the name of the article/non-physical product, and whether the picture is suitable for reproduction.
